My bike is bigger than yours
(Pictured above: Spending 20 minutes on a Ducati Monster 821 vs realising Kevin and I had ridden 150km towards Madurai, the exact opposite direction of our destination)
Big bikes are badder, go faster, sound better. But very few of them are actually used up to their potential. Owning a slightly smaller motorcycle on the other hand, makes way, way more sense. Let me explain.
ATTENTION ATTENTION
Big bikes attract attention. Most of us can spot a big bike
This is good, because who doesn't love the sound of a raspy V-twin or an Inline 4. This also means that you are the person of interest to the trolls who pop wheelies on busy streets, kids who scratch vehicles for pleasure and my favourite, people who just have to prove that they are better than you. Ask any big bike owner when was the last time they left they're bike unattended, or at a parking lot that was not secure. The concern is real.
ACCESSIBILITY
Smaller bikes are easy to handle. Take adventure motorcycling for instance. People who overland on motorcycles often claim that they did the trip on a BMW R1200GS, but it would have been easier on a 600 with soft luggage.
As awesome as it looks, it isn't for me.
Lighter, smaller/compact/quicker
RUNING COST
consumables like brake pads, tyres, oil changes, parts that regularly wear down are going to be more expensive on a big bike, obviously. If you are someone who rides everyday, like me, that's going to be really expensive.
Even in the event of a fall/crash, the cost is going to be way higher, not to forget insurance is also not going to be cheap.
FULL SPEED BRO
At least here in India, you will never see a sport bike blast down a highway unless it's on a Sunday in the morning. That's right, morning rides/breakfast rides are a thing and that's about the only time big bad bikes get to stretch their legs.
On a smaller bike, which is quick and not as fast, you can still have fun while being under the SPEED limit (lol) or at least at a safer speed.
There is also a sense of fulfilment/satisfaction when you ride on the limit of a smaller bike, something that rarely happens on a bigger motorcycle.
SMALL BIKES GO ANYWHERE
A hill? A trail? Track? Groceries? Small bikes can literally go anywhere. Check this out then.
